Yesterday December 6th Finland celebrated its Independence Day. The festivities and institutional events took place throughout the day culminating in the traditional Independence Day Party held at the presidential palace in Helsinki. It is the first time that this celebration is chaired by the newly elected President Sauli Niinistö.
The tradition of the Finnish celebration today dates back to 95 years ago. Finland became independent in 1917 after the first Russian Revolution, being the Bolsheviks who recognized their independence, having been, for more than 100 years, an autonomy of Russia’s tsarist regime.
