The Hollywood Film Academy, in charge of the Oscar Awards announced this morning the provisional list of nine films of which 5 will be nominated for the Oscar for Best Foreign Film of 2013.
Films of three Nordic countries remain in the race for the coveted Oscar statuette: Norway with “Kon–Tiki” by Espen Sandberg and Joachim Rønning, Denmark with “A Royal Affair” of Nikolaj Arcel and Iceland with “The Deep” by Baltasar Kormákur .
Unfortunately the Swedish film “The Hypnotist” by Lasse Hallström is not on the list. Nor was elected the option of Finland “Purge” by Antti J Jokinen.
Surely the race for the nominations and the Oscar itself will not be easy. These three Nordic films have fierce competition as the list includes also films such as the Austrian film “Amour” by Michael Haneke, the Canadian “War Witch,” by Kim Nguyen, the Chilean “No,” by Pablo Larrain, the Romanian “Beyond the Hills” by Cristian Mungiu, the Swiss “Sister” by Ursula Meier and the acclaimed and successful French film “the Untouchables” from Eric Toledano and Olivier Nakache.
The Academy never announces which films have been chosen by the executive committee and which by the general committee, although we could perhaps venture and think that “The Untouchables,” “A Royal Affair“, “The Deep” and “Kon-tiki “probably are general committee elections, and at least “Beyond The Hills” would be a executive committee election. But none of this can be known with certainty.
Hopefully the nordic films move on in the official nominations that will be announced on January 10th, 2013. The Oscar Awards gala will be held on February 24 at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles.
